School is the vital cornerstone of well-being for children. The simultaneus crushing of health and the economy has caused exceptional amount of human catastrophes. The current state of emergency exposes young school-age people to exclusion. The school environment has been a safe haven for many students. The future of humanity demands a focus on school safety and provides a secured working environment for everyone, which is the most significant line of defense!

Purpose 

The Digital Safety Preparedness for Schools provides School Administrators and School Resource Officers access to a cloud-based platform and model documents that assist them in developing and maintaining a digital school safety preparedness plan that support and enable school safety planning and response. 

Scope 

Schools need to extend safety preparedness to include digital content. The objective is to develop and maintain a set of documents that cumulatively provide comprehensive documentation and are updated to reflect current school safety preparedness practices. 

Implementation 

The school safety preparedness model documents assist School Administrators and School Resource Officers in producing components of their school safety preparedness documentation: 

• Safety Plan Policy: developing an overall framework to document your approach to safety planning 
• Communications Plan: thinking through communication scenarios and assigning responsibilities 
• Training Plan: developing then updating safety preparedness training and systematically providing 
• Roles and Responsibilities: identifying and assigning safety preparedness roles 

Each model document identifies the sections that should be included in the document with descriptions of the sections and examples.

School staff are brought into or assigned responsibility for the development or extension of a safety preparedness program to include digital content. It is beneficial that school staff participate in safety preparedness. Developing the roles and responsibilities document will help the School Administrator and School Resource Officer to identify the range of responsibilities that need to be engaged in safety planning.

1. Acknowledge: that digital content is essential in your school safety planning 
2. Act: establish a project to address digital safety planning for your school 
3. Consolidate: develop a set of safety planning documentation to demonstrate preparedness 
4. Operationalize: routinely update your school safety plan and test safety preparedness 
5. Externalize: share school safety preparedness documentation and experience with your community 

About the Digital School Safety Preparedness Model Documents 

• Since the start of the Digital School Safety Preparedness in 2015, many schools expressed the need for the Digital School Safety Preparedness as part of Community Safety Preparedness 
• Using the cloud-based platform and model document approach school administrators are guided in the development of their Digital School Safety Preparedness documentation 
• The Model Documents are now available for School Administrators, Staff and School Resource Officers
